This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
