Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a intense return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
